Matt's 2 Cents:  Insights On Life, News Stories & Trends

Opinions are like...let’s just say everyone has one.

Each month, Matt posts his 2 cents on life, the latest news stories and trends.

"You Are Happy"
When my wife and I moved to our home, I decided we should start a tradition of inviting our friends over for a Pig Roast on New Year’s Day. Each year the party gets a little better! And no, my 2 cents is not for others to follow suit, although that’s not a bad idea.

My 2 cents comes from something a 70 year old  friend of mine said to me during the party, “You are happy.” Of course I was. It was New Year’s Day. I was hosting a party with many of my dear friends. Live music, great food, I even had the Fire Department in our town drive their truck over for the kids to see. What was there to not be happy about? Of course she meant much more by her declaration. She meant that I was happy with my life. And I am. So I replied not surprisingly with “I am.” Smart, huh?

But later I asked myself why? And why are some others not? Don’t all of us know some people who appear to be perennially unhappy? What’s the difference between me and them I wondered? It made me question what they were doing with their time. After all, I know what I do with mine.

And here comes my 2 cents: time is the one thing in life we all have the same amount of. However, all of us choose to spend our equal allotment differently.  I spend almost all of mine doing things I enjoy, therefore I am happy most of the time. What did you expect for only 2 cents?

My advice: find five things you are passionate about, enthusiastic about, enjoy doing immensely and incorporate them into your life if you are not doing so already. And no, family does not count as something you are passionate about; that should be a given.

Personally, the five things I am most passionate about in no particular order are writing, playing the guitar, fly fishing, cooking, and flying.

What are yours?
